The great Maharaja who ushered in revolutionary social, political & relegious changes in his beautiful kingdom of Travancore. He is considered as the "Father of Industrialisation" in Kerala. He had started over 40 industrial enterprises in Southern kerala (erstwhile Travancore). His love for his people was so intense that even after loosing power he continued to help the underprevileged. He started many charitable trusts which runs into millions of rupees. if i try to list all of his achievements, i will run out of space. This great man will always live in hearts of the people of Kerala. He passed away in 1991. Technically he was an ordinary citizen, but the outpouring of grief by the public was astounding. He was cremated with full military as well as state honours. His famous "Temple Entry Proclamation" was the beginning of the end of bias against the so called "lower castes". As a King, his simple lifestyle & benevolent reign was a stark contrast to those lame North Indian kings who pushed their people into perpetual explotation. Sree Chithira Thirunal was praised by Gandhiji as the "modern Buddha".
